Marvel is now expected to focus on quality over quantity, and the new strategy has resulted in the cancellation of several projects that were previously on the studio’s slate. This includes the continuation of the Eternals series and the adventures of Captain Marvel.

After unsuccessful premieres in 2023, the head of Disney decided to introduce new standards to Marvel Studios. Now the main priority has become the creation of quality films and TV series, rather than their mass production. Bob Iger also expressed the opinion that the studio too often sets the task of creating sequels to film series. As part of this plan, three sequels to previously popular franchises were cancelled.

The latest leaks indicate that we won’t be seeing, at least for years, a sequel to Eternals, which was one of Marvel’s first major failures. The first film, released in 2021, earned only $400 million and received poor reviews from critics, among whom only 47% rated it positively.

Captain Marvel 3

Although the studio had plans to continue the adventures of a new group of heroes, recent setbacks caused Marvel to abandon the project. Kevin Feige planned to make Eternals 2, but his plans were thwarted by Bob Iger, who believes that a sequel to the 2021 film will be a failure. The studio’s goal now is to focus on creating “guaranteed hits.”

This also means that sequels to Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Ant-Man will not be released. The Marvels was also a flop, with audiences paying only $206 million in ticket prices, making it Marvel’s biggest flop. At the same time, the studio spent as much as $220 million on its production, so it was not possible to recoup the costs even by half – since the studio receives about 50% of box office revenues.

Against the backdrop of this failure, the film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” looked good, earning $476 million with mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, this result was also a setback, and Marvel is now delaying further adventures of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The studio is definitely slowing down the pace of releasing new films into theaters, and we’ll only see Deadpool 3 on the big screen this year. The situation will only change in 2025, when we will see films such as Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and Blade.
